The love of a great grandmother

Being a grandmother is the most gratifying thing in the world. You get to spoil these kids and then sent them home to be disciplined . Being a gram-ma is the most beautiful love a person can feel for their children. It is greater than the love you have for your own child,it's hard to explain.

But being a great grandmother is even better. You can just sit there and get their full attention just by talking .The voice of a great grandmother is soothing in some ways.My mother ,my grandson's great grandma,,,can hold his attention for hours just by telling him stories of the way it used to be. And I love to hear the both of them talk...his questions and her answers keep me curious on how it all will end. Some stories are made up of course because he wants her to tell him stories every day and she has come to a dead end on some days.When she tells him she is out of stories,he goes besides her,,,touches her hair and does a clicking sound with his tongue.This ,he says,is magic and puts new stories in her head.She looks at him and smiles then says to him,,,,You're right ,i feel a story coming in my head. He just smiles at her and they continue chatting.

The funny thing is ,he thinks she was around when the dinosaurs were still alive. She lets him believe this,she says it keeps him interested and happy,she says ,,he's only three,let him enjoy it in his imagination.

Great grandmother have been around for a long time,not as long as a dinosaur,but a long long time. The stuff that has changed since then is quite interesting. The new gadgets we can't live without right now are to them just a bother.Like a computer,why do we need to know all that goes on in each others lives she asks,it's not any one'sbusiness.Why do you need to keep talking to your friends all day she asks the teenagers around her.Why does Oprah ask them people such personal questions? it's not any one's business she adds .Ha...she finds the way kids nowadays dress,,or should i say ,,,under dress quite awful..they have their belly where all can see..they are showing everything ,and why do they wear their pants lower than their underwear,,,wherehas this world gone to? She also finds that people nowadays don't respect each other like they did in her days. The marriages don't last long ,she says,saying couples nowadays don't give in when they have a fight. One has to give in,or shut up,so the other one can feel he or she won the argument.Now THAT's the way a marriage works. You have to do your share of work while the other does the rest. Woman should stay home and bring up the kiddies while the husband goes and works all day. That makes me laugh ,but I have to say,she's right on the marriage part...one always has to shut up first to stop any argument,,ha-ha,,,

It's like having a walking encyclopedia,she can tell you almost anything you want from the past. It's fun to hear and we don't always think of how fast it can all be taken away,being a great grandmother,means you are way down the hill in a hurry. It's are a rare breed for sure. A lot can be learned from them. And one should take every bit they tell you and write it down in a journal for keepsake. The stories they tell are not found in many places or in any library. They know all the old remedies we sometimes laugh at but when you try it out, they actually work. Like putting salted herring under your feet will lower a high temperature or that rubbing Vick's vapour rub under your feet will help you stop coughing during the night. All are old remedies we laugh at but most of them I've tried and they do work.

Cooking is also something a great grandmother will teach you that nobody else could ever find in any book or website. Like putting fresh snow in a cake recipe will replace the egg you forgot to buy.Funny but it works.I can almost see your eyebrows lift as you read about the snow.

Walking for miles in the cold winter to go to church is something very normal in them days.Now ,we have fancy cars and still have excuses for not going. Great grandmothers have lived through tough times and find the way we live now a royal living. Dishwashers,washers, dryers,air conditioned homes,indoor toilets,not one but two,hot water all the time without worrying about boiling some on the hot stove just to take a bath.Self cleaning ovens,microwave ovens,central vacuums,heating that doesn't mean hauling wood all summer to heat the house up all winter.And the list goes on.I guess when one thinks about living without all that stuff ,you can feel a bit lucky about being born now rather than then.

Great grandmothers are precious .They are great to be around .They love to tell stories be it the truth or made up. They love you no matter what....
